ARTIST BIO
Sonya G Peters was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She worked as a graphic designer after completing a Diploma of Applied Arts in Illustration at Sheridan College, Ontario before moving to Australia in 1991. Following the move Sonya has completed a Bachelor of Fine Art with First class Honours and a Master of Visual Art at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University where she is now teaching.
Since her emergence Sonya continues to explore the creative process as both a visual and tactile experience⎯to draw is to touch/feel and to see is to touch/feel. She cannot separate the act of seeing from the act of touching from the act of drawing, for Sonya they become one and the same⎯an embodied experience. Sonya has found that this tactile experience of drawing/mark-making is further developed through the sometimes-unorthodox use of materials that continue to engage the senses and it is precisely this interrelationship between vision and touch from an embodied perspective that explores and reveals the intangible aspects of human experience.
